Coil sprung Land Rovers came with several different axle configurations depending on the year manufactured, the model, optional equipment such as ABS brakes and the country it was sold in. This discussion is oriented toward U.S. specification vehicles and does not include Range Rover 4.0/4.6 models and possibly Series ll Discoveries which we haven't looked at yet. A quick overview of the stock axles is as follows:

U.S. spec Range Rovers from 1987 to mid 1993 all had 1"/10 spline axles front and rear at which point they were increased in size to 1.25"/24 spline. There was a small change in length of the rear axles with the 1990 models due to the addition of ABS brakes. 1987 models had suffix A front axles, 1988/89 models were suffix B's. They changed again with the addition of ABS brakes in 1990. Constant Velocity (CV) joints also changed with the axle changes. In mid 1993 the front axles also were enlarged to 1.25/24 spline although the CV end of the front inner axle was unfortunately reduced in size to 1.030"/32 spline.

All U.S. spec Discoverys and Defender 90's came equipped with 1.25/24 spline axles front and rear and unfortunately the 1.030"/32 spline CV joints. I say unfortunately because the 1.030" diameter reduces the potential strength substantially.

Defender 110's were 1.25"/24 spline rear and 1.25"/24 spline in the front with the exception of the outer axle which is 1"/10 spline into the drive flange.

All stock Land Rover axles are manufactured from commercial grade materials and designs which can be easily upgraded for increased strength and durability. The earlier smaller axles can also be upgraded to the later larger sizes.

Great Basin Rovers’ late model Rover axles are unique because they are all manufactured with a special aviation grade alloy steel which has properties that allow maximum flex without breaking. On rocks or sand or even icy roads, spinning tires that suddenly catch traction can cause normal axles to snap if the stress is great enough. When your off-road vehicle has a rigid center-locking differential like Land Rovers do, you need forgiving axles that will handle sudden traction changes without giving out.

When climbing hills or helping recover a stuck vehicle, a powerful four-wheel drive runs the risk of damaged axles if high amounts of stress are encountered at the wrong times. If you find yourself using your four-wheel drive constantly, chances are the added durability and flex of the Great Basin Axles could really serve you well in the long run.

Heavy Duty Rear Axle Upgrade Kits (24 Spline)

Heavy Duty Rear Axle Upgrade Kits

GBR’s late model Rover axles are all manufactured with a special aviation grade alloy steel and all utilize an advanced wasted design that allow maximum flex without breaking. All of these axles have bead blasted final finishes. Most applications come supplied with GBR heavy duty drive flanges. These axles are estimated to be at least 100% stronger than stock axles and are highly recommended for extreme four wheelers, vehicles with oversize tires and/or more powerful engines. All of these axles are 1.25"/24 spline so no machining or custom differentials are required.

Note: Defender 110’s from the factory have a 2 piece axle i.e. separate drive flanges, which can be reused with our axles.

Extreme Duty Rear Axle Upgrade Kits (30 Spline)

This axle kit includes larger axles than stock (1.315") and a larger spline count (30). The axles are manufactured from the finest aviation grade steel available, and are fully waisted and bead blasted. This kit requires a conversion kit to replace the side gears in the differential housing and also requires the drive spindles to be bored slightly oversize (+.020").

We can supply the side gear conversion kits for both ARB and Detroit Locker differentials and can also provide spindles bored to the correct size on an exchange basis. This kit also comes with our special drive flanges. We can also supply these axles "gun bored"**, a process where a hole is bored down the center of the axle for two reasons:

1.      This bored hole reduces the axles’ weight, allowing for less resistance to torque.

2.      This bore also makes the axle significantly stronger. This may seem like a contradiction. However, the additional surface area creates another surface that must break before a failure occurs. It also allows for a forgiving flex that could save your axles from a jolt that might otherwise snap a more rigid design. The same is true in driver shafts: a hollow tube drive shaft is stronger than a solid one!

Note:  There is a $150 core charge included for part # [GBR-+.020”] of $150.00 which will be refund upon core return.

Heavy Duty Front Axle Upgrade Kits

This front axle kit is manufactured with the same high quality aviation alloy steel and advanced design and finish, waisted and bead blasted, as our rear axles. This kit replaces the inner axle and the cage in the constant velocity joint (See CV Joint section for details). This kit allows you to replace the two weakest parts of the front axle assembly economically. This kit is a direct replacement and requires no machine work or custom differentials.

Extreme Duty Front Axle Upgrade Kits

These axles (GBR-2520-24 & GBR-2521-24) are again manufactured with the finest aviation alloys and designed for the maximum longevity under the most extreme conditions using the advanced designs of our other axles.

This kit replaces all of the front axle components - inner axles, CV joints and drive flanges. The difference with this kit is that it eliminates the 1.030"/32 CV joint and replaces it with a 1.20"/23 spline CV joint (GBR-2522). This eliminates the small 1.030 inch end of the inner axle, the weak point in the front axle assembly.

The CV joint supplied with this kit is larger and has 1.20"/23 spline axle input. We also upgrade it by the addition of one of our heavy duty CV cages (GBR-CG2522). GBR drive flanges are included to complete the package. Also included are two fitting bushes, two FTC254 spacers and two RTC4820 spring rings.

Note:  1987-89 Range Rovers require some machining to swivel balls to complete the installation.

Heavy Duty Constant Velocity [CV] Joints

One of the problems encountered with all stock CV joints when they are used off-road, is that they are designed for maximum mileage longevity on road. This means that they consist of a very hard tool steel that has been treated to a Rockwell (RC) rating of 70.

The Rockwell rating measures hardness, a trait achieved through extensive heat treating. CV joints are normally heat treated to a higher level so that they can withstand many miles of wear. This hardness however, is a negative trait off-raod because it allows for no flexibility. The high shock loads frequently encountered in extreme off road situations will destroy stock CV-Joints quickly simply because of their high density.  A 70 RC rating is comparable to the hardness rating of glass, so it is not surprising that the number one cause of CV joint failure is the inner cage shattering!

We solve this problem by having our CV cages manufactured from cryogenically stabilized aviation grade steel and apply a more appropriate RC rating. This combination of tempering techniques approximately doubles the peak overload capability while retaining 75% of the mileage longevity. Reducing the mileage longevity may sound like a disadvantage but if you are doing constant off-roading with your Rover, it is extremely unlikely your stock CV joints would last for normally expected lifespan anyway. These units can be retrofitted to used CV joints in good condition.

 Heavy Duty Drive Flanges

These are the Great Basin Rovers heavy duty drive flanges that are supplied standard with some of our axle kits. These can also be used by themselves as an optional upgrade.

Heavy Duty Drive Flanges improve off-road performance in two ways:

1. The Great Basin Flanges are machined from chrome molybdenum steel and splined to exact tolerances to provide a tighter fitting spline that reduces backlash in the case of traction loss and regain. The higher tensile that results from this process also allows for a longer wear-life of the splines.

2. Instead of the original plastic cap which has been known to allow water to enter the wheel bearings, these flanges are threaded and fitted with a hexagon screw on cap machined from solid steel. Unlike the plastic cap, these caps will not easily be knocked off while off-roading. These flanges have a positive seal that neither allows oil to escape nor water to enter.  On some models these heavy duty flanges eliminate the need for the axle case oil seal and permit the lubrication of your rear wheel bearings with gear oil.

Installation Note:  We recommend using RTC3511 hub seals even if you don't eliminate the axle case seal. This is a double lip seal and a vast improvement over the seal currently specified by Land Rover. When Land Rover added the axle case seal they used a much less effective hub seal because the wheel bearing now specified only requires wheel bearing grease for the bearings. Wheel bearing grease is very easy to seal in because it doesn’t go anywhere ie: it doesn't flow. The problem is the current specified seal isn't very effective at sealing things out such as water - hence the risk premature of wheel bearing failure! When installing RTC3511 hub seals, recess them 3mm into the hub or you will get a false reading on your wheel bearing preload.
