Great Basin Rovers was started in 1992 and is primarily owned by Bill Davis. Great Basin Rovers specializes in Land Rover products that have a special emphasis on durability, reliability and performance. We have been Land Rover enthusiasts and avid off roaders for 20 plus years in some of the most rugged and remote areas of the western United States, where major mechanical failures can be extremely inconvenient.  We have seen and experienced first hand some of the mechanical short comings of our beloved Land Rovers and our experience has proven to us that it is possible to significantly improve the durability, reliability and performance of the Land Rover both on and off the road, while at the same time retaining their unique character.  We place our emphasis on drivetrain upgrades for Land Rovers.

 4.1 Ring & Pinion Gears


One of the frustrations with owning a Land Rover has been the lack of choice in the final drive ratios. A solution is now available. GBR now offers an alternative gear ratio to solve this problem - 4.10 (10 X 41), which splits the two factory ratios almost exactly in half. It lowers the overall gearing of later model Rovers by 12.5% but actually feels greater than that because at the same speed you are operating at a higher RPM and are further up the power curve. This is an ideal ratio for later model Rovers, which are geared a bit on the tall side (3.54) to start with, particularly if you install oversize tires or live at a higher altitude. You will notice the benefits immediately, 5th gear becomes much more usable, towing is easier and you wonąt be downshifting nearly as often. In particular, vehicles with automatic transmissions benefit because you gain back some of the power you lose with an automatic transmission.  You will have more power and acceleration under normal driving conditions and you will have more power and control in off road conditions. To quote one of our customers’ “The 4.10 gears transformed the vehicle.” These gears are manufactured as a direct replacement for the later factory 3.54 ratio with 24 spline pinion gears. You do not need a spacer ring and only need to replace the pinion flange on earlier vehicles with 4 spline pinion gears - mid 1993 Range Rovers and earlier. The 24 spline pinion flange is actually an upgrade for these vehicles as the greater number of splines reduces backlash between these parts and hence reduces shock loads in the drivetrain. All of these gear sets come supplied with 10 new grade 8 ring gear bolts and a new grade 8 pinion nut. We can also supply all hardware to complete the installation - preload and pinion height shims, seals, bearings and gaskets. We manufacture these gears with a higher specification steel, shot peen them for stress relief, and radius the teeth to create the highest quality, strongest, quietest 4.1 gear set on the market. These additional processes are not even found on genuine O.E.M. quality gear sets, only the finest, specialty race applications.

Master Install Kit Includes - This kit is recommended for vehicles with higher mileages and in addition to everything found in the install kit includes a complete set of differential bearings - 2 carrier bearings, 1 inner pinion bearing and 1 outer pinion bearing.

 4.75 Ring & Pinion Gears

 

If your projected use includes a larger percentage of off road use - particularly at higher altitudes, tires larger than 33 inches tall or you just want the lowest gearing you can economically install in your Rover - 4.75 gearing may be appropriate. As noted earlier higher numeric gear ratios sets sacrifice some strength compared to the stock 3.54 ratio. To compensate for this we have changed the tooth count to 8 X38 compared to the 10 X 47 tooth count of a normal 4.7 ratio. The smaller number of teeth on the gears means the teeth are thicker and hence stronger. These gears are manufactured as a direct replacement for the later factory 3.54 ratio with 24 spline pinion gears. You do not need a spacer ring and only need to replace the pinion flange on earlier vehicles with 4 spline pinion gears - mid 1993 Range Rovers and earlier.
